Advanced Training
The Sea Scouting Program offers two unique and exceptional courses. Both of these courses focus less on Seamanship skills and more on leadership development and all of the skills that go with improving as a leader. For Sea Scouts the youth can take part in Sea Scout Advanced Leadership or SEAL. Adult leaders have the opportunity to take a different, albeit similar, course called Seabadge.
SEAL
SEAL Training is an amazing youth leadership training and is designed specifically for Sea Scouts! The program focuses on leadership and teamwork and breaks those down into specific skills that will be developed through the course. The bulk of the week will be “at Sea” so that each activity is real and not just a scenario. The practical application of the skills taught mean that your crew will be successful in your week at sea. Scouts are expected to arrive with basic navigation skills, knowledge of seamanship and the vocabulary that goes with it, and the ability to tie knots. For these reasons Scouts may not attend until they are at the rank of Ordinary. At the conclusion of the course Sea Scouts will be able to wear the SEAL pin and a patch on their uniform to let people know they have received this intense training.
Skills taught include:
- Evaluation
- Training
- Planning and Preparation
- Counseling
- Team Building
- Communicating
- Motivating
- Implementing and Re-Implementing
- Leadership
- Goal Setting
- Managing, Supervising, and Commanding
- Problem Solving
Seabadge
Seabadge is the highest adult training there is for Sea Scouters. Similar to the Wood Badge program, also in the Boy Scouts of America, the course focuses on leadership at the adult level. Understanding how you communicate, how to best communicate to others, various styles of leadership and motivation and how to apply those styles to different situations to help your Sea Scouts achieve everything that they are capable of. Although this is similar to Wood Badge, everything in Seabadge is done through the lens exclusively of Sea Scouts. In addition to the typical leadership and development skills you will learn things that are specific for Sea Scouting. Although Seabadge is intended to help Sea Scout leaders develop to be the best leaders possible, it is not exclusive to the Sea Scout program. This makes it a great opportunity for adult leaders in other programs of the Boy Scouts of America who want to learn about becoming better leaders to attend, and also become familiar with a working understanding of the Sea Scouting program.
